Glossary
Like most tools, Hotpot has its own lingo and terms. Here are some terms to help you get started!
- Backstop is the user that acts as the schedule's emergency contact. Hotpot leverages the backstop for situations where it can't satisfy the on-call schedule requirements.
- Moment is message that may require attention. Typically, Hotpot receives moments from integrations. Moments have types such as an alert, page, incident, near-miss, or problem. The name comes from "Oops, we had a moment there!"
- Moment group is a collection of thematically related moments chosen by the user with help from Hotpot. Groups help organize and track moments over time.
- Page is a type of moment wherein Hotpot reaches out to a user through text message, Slack, and so on.
- Smart Scheduler is Hotpot's tool for generating schedules based upon your needs, available on-call users, and other configuration settings.
- Shift is a period of time spent on-call! Only one shift per team may be active at a time.
- Schedule is your on-call setup for a group of people.
- Time zone is...well, you know what a time zone is. What's helpful to know is Hotpot factors a user's time zone into the Smart Scheduler, so make sure you set this value correctly in your profile (in the app, under [profile icon] > Your Settings > On-call). The Hotpot app also has a display time zone, adjusted using the drop-down at the lower-right corner of the app. Changing the display time zone doesn't affect the schedule or the user's setting.
- Triage is the act of periodically evaluating moments for their usefulness and themes.
- Working hours are factored into the Smart Scheduler. Setting your working hours is vital to tracking disruption in Hotpot so you'll be asked to do so when you onboard. You can also set them under [profile icon] > Your Settings > On-call.
